you can take a look at these cars frost all over them. we're in san anselmo where these freezing temperatures are expected to last until 8:00 this morning. some of last night's overnight temperatures were the coldest we have seen since january. temperatures where we are are expected to reach freezing or below and it's not just here in the north bay. last night it reached 39 degrees in pleasanton. and neighbors there definitely felt the chill in the air. >> we have layers on most of the kids i think three layers on both of them, socks under the sleepers so we're good to go. >> reporter: the freezing temperatures won't be here long. we are expected to warm back up and as liz mentioned bring a little rain and that makes state water managers happy since july 132% more rain than normal in san francisco. oakland has had more than 9" of rainfall since summer, 7" more than last year. looking live at this car covered in frost. as for these cold temperatures, if you are here in the north bay, get ready for the chilly

morning commute. i can actually see my breath. probably doesn't translate on air. it is cold and freeze warnings will be in effect until 8:00 this morning. we are live in san anselmo, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> it is cold. >> not impressed. >> i know. but you know what? i thought gianna that moving from colorado i would be done with ice scrapers. >> no. there are times you need it here in california but i don't think it gets as cold as california. so there is good news there. we have a couple of things brewing here. ben lomond highway 9 at glen arbor. not a lot of details for this trouble spot but lots of activity a tree down wires also down in the roadway they have completely shut down highway 9 at glen arbor through there. they are saying now that noon is the eta when they should be reopened so highway 9 ben lomond in the santa cruz county area. so avoid the area if you can in morning because of that.

elsewhere we don't have any accidents to report otherwise. westbound 580 looking good through the altamont pass to the dublin interchange. only a 14-minute ride no delays on 680 just yet. also highway 4 we have some early-morning roadwork westbound and eastbound a full freeway closure at one point but everything is in the green now so traffic free-flowing both directions. you might see some on- and off- ramps through the area. westbound 237 through milpitas not bad so far, so good and easy 6 to 8 minutes between 880 and 101. 880 looks good. we have roadwork northbound, southbound near fruitvale and embarcadero but this morning things are quiet along 880 northbound no delays near the coliseum southbound looks good as well and if you are going across the golden gate bridge so far, so good no delays into san francisco. and let's get a live look right now at some of our other bay area bridges. the san mateo bridge a nice start to your drive this morning. 14 minutes to go between 880 and 101. know delays there looking good across the peninsula. if you have a flight to catch

at sfo you're free-flowing along 101 and over on the bay bridge traffic also light at the bay bridge. metering lights are off no delays up the incline. we have roadwork at 7:00 on the lower deck of the bay bridge but typically doesn't cause too many problems past that section where the caltrans is. that's a look at your morning drive. back to you. >> thank you. this morning, classes will resume for students at san jose city college less than 24 hours after a lockdown. s.w.a.t. teams swarmed the campus yesterday after a caller reported seeing a gunman. heavily armed police officers searched the campus room by room during the three-hour lockdown. the 911 call came in yesterday afternoon. the caller reported seeing a male possibly armed with a gun at the tech center building. students and faculty were slowly released from classrooms as officers searched the entire five-story building. for many on campus of course it

was a disturbing ordeal. >> we definitely barricaded down, sat there hushed our voices got away from the windows made sure we weren't near where anybody can look in. and we were worried. we were afraid. >> well, when all was said and done police were unable to find any indication that a gunman was on campus. but officers did say that they did a thorough search for the sake of caution. more people are coming forward talking about previous interactions with connecticut gunman adam lanza. workers at a newtown hair salon with lanza and his mother were regular customers say they never heard him speak. they say nancy lanza would give her son directions about what to do and where to go. meanwhile, investigators are still not clear what motivated adam lanza to open fire at an elementary school on friday. marlie hall has more from newtown. reporter: good morning, michelle. several parents here in newtown, connecticut continue to face the unthinkable burying

their children. five funerals are scheduled for today and people are still reeling. hundreds gathered for memorial service to remember sandy hook elementary principal dawn hochsprung. she died trying to stop the shooter after he broke into the school. >> you don't have to know her. you just have to know what she did is an act of selflessness and that touches humanity. >> reporter: hochsprung's funeral is just one of five that will be held today. tuesday saw two more children laid to rest. 6-year-old james mattioli loved sports and math. his family called him a numbers guy. and jessica rekos loved horses. she wanted a cowgirl hat for christmas. yesterday was a day of mixed emotions for many parents and students as school reopened in newtown for everyone except the kids who attend sandy hook elementary. >> so, like, surreal. >> reporter: there were some who stayed away. >> my neighbor up the street, her kid didn't come back. >> reporter: but there was also this: smiles from children who

appeared to be happy to be going back to school. the tragedy here has reopened a debate on what kind of guns should be allowed in society, with many now taking a new look at the issue. there's a groundswell of support in washington, d.c. to look at new laws that would ban magazines that hold dozens of bullets at a time even from pro gun legislators. >> i go hunting. i never put more than three shells in my clip. it holds five. >> reporter: even the national rifle association chimed in to say, "the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to make sure this never happens again." >> reporter: white house spokesman jay carney says the president is actively supporting a bill to reinstate the assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. michelle? >> marlie, you were talking about kids going back to school and it was a day of mixed emotion. tell me what the mood is like after that. i'm sure it's really hard for parents to send their kids back

investigators hoped a computer and hard drive recovered at gunman adam lanza's home would shed some light on the reason for the massacre, but the 20- year-old deliberately smashed his electronic devices into so many small pieces the fbi lab is unable to retrieve anything from the hard drive. investigators will continue to search through lanza's cell phone and credit card records. thoughts of the connecticut shooting victims still on the minds of people in the bay area, of course. yesterday evening families and educators in the pleasanton unified school district held a candlelight vigil. photos of the 26 victims were displayed on a tree at amaral park. pleasanton school officials say it's a sad reminder of the importance of their jobs. >> just always looking at procedures and practices and always thinking about what else we could do to improve. >> letters, pictures and donations from pleasanton will be sent to newtown this week. the san jose sikh temple has a candlelight vigil planned for 6:30 tonight. belmont police are looking

for a suspect in a bank robbery. surveillance video captured a man robbing a u.s. bank on ralston avenue yesterday. the man between the ages of 25 and 35 approached the teller, demanding cash. the employee complied and the suspect ended up leaving. witnesses saw a silver sedan speeding near the bank but officers haven't determined if that car belonged to the suspect. registered nurses plan to picket 21 kaiser permanente hospitals in northern california today. they are trying to draw attention to what they call inadequate staffing. kaiser officials deny that. the picket lines are scheduled from two to 6:00 this afternoon. berkeley councilmembers took up the "no drone" zone issue last night. drones are unmanned aircraft used by the government to watch over u.s. ports and borders. the fbi and a dozen police and sheriff's departments have them. critics say the drones are an invasion of privacy. the council decided to send the

work your way into walnut creek. also if you are headed through antioch so far, so good. some slight brake lights on the westbound side. we had a full freeway closure this morning but that's wrapped up so traffic is okay in both directions as of right now. westbound 237 a live look here through conditions in milpitas. so far no delays this morning. smooth sailing as you work your way through there. also coming off the eastshore freeway traffic looks good as you work your way toward the bay bridge, no delays. also at the bay bridge metering lights are off clear up the incline and heading into san francisco no delays along central freeway. also north 880 a nice ride so far if you are heading out of oakland towards the maze. lower that through hayward and fremont. 880 looks good into the south bay same for the golden gate bridge no delays out of marin county. here's a look at your travel times along the peninsula. is over so good on 101.

>> told temperatures, this is actually could be one of the coldest days of the year. 37 at the coast, 28 the average low inland. so very cold there and we do have a number of frost advisories freeze warnings for the north bay. so you get the drill. it's going to be chilly outside as you're about to head outside this afternoon. low to mid-50s. we'll see sunshine so a similar story to what we saw yesterday. definitely jacket weather. but it is staying dry at least for today. temperatures outside right now and this is where we see all those freeze warnings and in fact for parts of the north bay so only 28 in napa 29 in santa rosa. but even some of our east bay valleys look at livermore below freezing right now. it is a little warmer in parts of oakland, san francisco coming in, in the low 40s. so this is what's going on.

that high pressure is a weak ridge today. but it's going to bring us cold temperatures dry weather until tomorrow evening. we're watching this low coming in from the gulf of alaska and it looks like it's slightly a slow mover so now we're thinking thursday evening is when the first rain showers are going to hit and then it actually looks pretty unsettled straight through the weekend. pinpoint forecast for your highs for later on today, once again a lot of 50s. 55 in oakland. 52 in san francisco. mid-50s along the peninsula there in redwood city and about 54 degrees by later on this afternoon in san jose. so we have one more really cold day and then we slightly warm up for thursday. but then once again the rain returns after nightfall and then friday, saturday, sunday, things continue to look unsettled until christmas eve. christmas day. for right now, looks dry for the start of next week. that's a check of your traffic and weather together every 10 minutes. back to you guys. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... and liftoff!

the storm unit there behind me. the fire department was called here at about 1 a.m. after somebody reported smoke coming from that storage unit. when firefighters got here, they found a body inside. now, they are not calling this a murder investigation. they say they don't know how the person died. the coroner removed the body and will try to figure out what happened here at this small apartment complex in campbell. the police department is here and the arson squad will be reporting soon this morningas well, and get a little more information as far as the damage to the storage unit, not significant. it looks like structurally the storage unit is fine. they are taking the stuff out and trying to find more clues into how this person died. anne makovec, cbs 5. a developing story we have been following out of siskiyou

county near the oregon border. northbound interstate five remains closed after a 64-car pile-up last night. the series of crashes started around 6:30 late on tuesday. the pile-up stretched for a mile along the northbound side of the freeway between yreka and the state border. at least 7 people suffered minor to moderate injuries and were taken to area hospitals. black ice is blamed for the accident. right here in the bay area we are feeling the freeze. >> the big chill hit. it's the coldest it's been since january. we have the latest on the weather from elizabeth. >> it's cold. we are going to get a firsthand account in a minute but you will notice it's dipped to the 20s in a lot of spots. freeze warning in effect for the north bay. frost advisories for the east and south bay valleys. and all along the bay you will notice these reds and blues. those are super cold spots.

livermore below freezing. it is going to be a little warmer along the bay. let's see, 41 in san francisco but it has dipped to about 38 in oakland. just a couple of degrees more in the last couple of minutes. right now these are your highs for later on this afternoon. we are seeing a lot of low it mid-50s. we won't budge much more than that. we're watching a low pressure system and it's going to bring rain by tomorrow evening and check that out. it looks like like things will remain unsettled through saturday, sunday, continuing into the weekend until we dry out in time for christmas eve. all about these cold temperatures cate caugiran is out in the cold every morning, does it feel any different this morning than any other day? >> i think it's colder definitely this morning and, of course, as we mentioned this is a day i bring one glove to work so that doesn't help. but i want to show you how cold it is in san anselmo. we have cars completely covered

another strong day on wall street. the dow climbed 115 points, nasdaq up 44. signs of stimulus action from the bank of japan sent asian markets higher, tokyo's nikkei surged 2.5%. hong kong's hang seng added half a percent. and although the president and house speaker john boehner have made headway on budget negotiations, boehner says he is going forward with the plan that is separate from the deal he is working on with the president. the white house and democratic lawmakers have already rejected boehner's plan b to stepped low tax rates to all americans except those who make a million dollars or more a year. the house will vote on the alternate plan thursday. swiss bank ubs admits to fraud and agrees to pay more than $1 billion in fines. the settlement comes after an investigation found ubs bankers engaged in rigging the liber rate. instagram backing off its policy to use photos in
